Favorite Christmas Christ-Focused Children Books

This is our first Christmas with our sweet little son. Though he cannot understand the words of the many books I have already read to him, it has been fun to read some Christmas books to him in light of the season.  He enjoys the bright illustrations of each of these books, tracking with each page and focusing on certain details (boy, I wish I could read his mind!). Although I love all things Christmasy, from Santa to snowmen to peppermint mochas, I definitely want to be intentional about teaching our little guy about the story of Jesus' birth and why it is our hope and joy. The books below are the ones I have at our home so far. I look forward to adding to our collection in future years.

Part of the "God Gave Us" series, this sweet story follows Little Cub and her Mama as they travel around snow-capped trails to discuss why and how God gave us Christmas. Mama explains deep theological truths through powerful allegories simplified for young readers to understand.

Recommended ages: Kindergarten and grade-school

Sarah Young continues her unique writing style from her Jesus Calling series as she takes young readers from Creation to show that Jesus has always been present and that God always planned for Jesus to be born and to become our salvation. Perfect for reading as an Advent devotional in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Recommended age: Kinder and grade-school

What is Christmas all about? Sally Lloyd-Jones (author of the brilliant and best-selling The Jesus Storybook Bible) explains themes of Christmas through traditional symbols of Christmas such as twinkling lights, angels, and stars. The pages alternate between woodland animals decorating a Christmas tree and the Nativity story. Creative and delightful board book for young children!
Recommended ages: Toddlers and older

Was it really a silent night when Jesus was born, as the age old carol declares? This adorable board book supposes it may have been a noisy night with animals in the stable celebrating the birth of the Savior. Simple rhymes in a sing-song pace, it helps little ones imagine what that first Christmas night was like.

Recommended age: Infants to pre-schoolers

Lastly, I wanted to recommend the Advent Guide from Sally Lloyd-Jones. It has readings from The Jesus Storybook Bible that takes young readers from Genesis to the Savior's birth with daily readings and activities. The guide is free when submitting an email.
