6 Beloved Storybook Bibles

Storbybook Bibles are wonderful resources for Christian families to introduce the Bible to little ones. The vibrant illustrations and simple (often rhyming) phrases are captivating and easy to grasp for even young children. Here are four storybook Bibles I own that I am looking forward to reading with our future children one day. Several have already been used for my Sunday school classes in past years. These particular books are probably easiest to understand for preschoolers and older.

The Jesus Storybook Bible
Written by Sally Lloyd-Jones; Illustrated by Jago
This is by far my favorite storybook Bible. With each page, Sally Lloyd-Jones masterfully pens Bible stories that all point to the meta-narrative of the Bible -- The Big Story, as she says. Each story "whispers" the name of Jesus, whether in the Old or New Testament. She explains how Jesus is like a missing piece in a puzzle -- "the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together". He is the better Moses, rescuing us from the slavery of sin. He is the better David, a perfect King over all kings. He is a better Abraham,  the hope for all nations. One of the clearest ways to explain God's unfailing love was written in this storybook Bible: God's Never-Stopping, Never Giving Up, Unbreakable, Always and Forever Love. YES! That is His love for us! A child can grasp these simple words, yet it is still utterly profound truth for me as an adult to remind myself. For more interactive reading experiences, there are animated videos you can purchase on Amazon but some of them can be found on Youtube as well.

The Beginner's Bible
Zonderkidz
This is another beloved Storybook Bible I have used with Sunday school kids. They enjoy the fun, expressive illustrations as well as the easy-to-understand timeless stories (more than ninety included!).  There's now even a free iPad app with narration, music, and sound effects to further help bring these stories to life.

My Great Big God
Written by Andy Holmes; Illustrated by Marta Alvarez Miguens
An endearingly written Bible storybook about how big God is, told in age-appropriate, adorable rhyming verses and simple yet encouraging reminders of His character. The colorful and detailed illustrations add on to the stories to bring them to life for little ones. Talking about the big-ness of God can easily turn into a somewhat overwhelming rather than comforting doctrine if it is not balanced with the big, personal love of God as well. God is not a ginormous, distant diety waiting to point his lighting rods at your mistakes, but rather a ginormous God with a ginormous heart for His people. The twenty Bible stories each focus on a takeaway statement that reminds children they are loved by this big God. In A Great  Big World, the reader is reminded that our "great, big God" (as He is described in each story), made everything (including the "great big bears and puppy dogs / kittens, bunnies, and hopping frogs"). In the story of Moses and the exodus from Egypt, the takeaway is that "my great big God saves the day!" while the Ten Commandments reminds us "my great big God guides me!" This book is a great for young children as well as truth-filled reminders for parents, siblings, Sunday school teachers, or grandparents who read them along with the children.

Jesus Calling: My First Bible Storybook
Written by Sarah Young; Illustrated by Antonio Woodward
Jesus Calling was originally a devotional for adults. After becoming a bestseller, Young wrote this book for preschoolers to also understand the love of Jesus in Young's reflective style of writing. For each of the twenty stories, she writes short paragraph about the Bible story, then a Jesus Calling phrase (a reflection as if Jesus is speaking directly to the child" and a Bible verse that corresponds. In the story of David and Goliath, for example, the Jesus Calling reflection was "I will help you be brave and strong" while in the story of Jesus feeding the multitude with a little boy's lunch, the reflection is "I can use you to help others -- no matter how old you are!" These personalized statements can help bolster a child's faith in Jesus's love for them.

Look & Find Bible Storybook
Written by Charlotte Thoroe & B.A. Jones; Illustrated by Gill Guile
Calling all Where's Waldo fans! School age kids will love the super-busy illustrated scenes in each of the eight Bible stories. They'll not only learn about well-loved stories but also have fun finding dozens of people, animals, and objects. Bible stories include the Creation, Noah's Amazing Ark, The Exodus, David and Goliath, Jonah and the Big Fish, Jesus Is Born, Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand, and Jesus is Risen. This is a creative way to bring some interactive fun to well-known Bible stories.

Precious Moments: Little Book  of  Bible Stories
Written by Jean Fischer
The classic illustrations of the beloved Precious Moments brand and easy-to-understand language help capture the heard behind sixteen Bible stories. A sentence prayer and short memory verse accompanies each story to allow application for young readers. I grew up loving Previous Moments and had a Bible and Romanian poetry book with the adorable illustrations, so this was a treat to receive. I hope to one day introduce Precious Moments to my future kids and this storybook Bible may be just the opportunity!
