8 Things to do in Maui

Maui is a Hawaiian island widely known for its posh resorts, outdoor activities, and vastly diverse geography. It was both mine and Greg's first time to Maui and we wanted to soak up the experience but also make sure we had time to relax after all the wedding planning. We stayed at Westin Maui Resort & Spa in Ka'anapali (western side of Maui) for ten days in October 2015 for our honeymoon and absolutely loved it! We had a good balance of relaxing the first half of the trip and then exploring the island the second half. Here are 8 things we loved doing in Maui!

1. Relax and soak in the sun
Wherever you are on the island, find yourself a spot to chill for a few hours. A blanket on the sand or a beach chair at your resort, slather on the SPF, treat yourself to a yummy drink, grab a book or put your headphones in, and soak in the moment.

2. Take a day trip to Lahaina
If you are in Ka'anapali, then you're only a short (10-15minute) bus ride away from this quant village full of charming beachside shops and restaurants. Relax under the shade of the huge Banyon Tree, visit the beach or the harbor, or do some water activities.

3. Eat the delicious local food
The prices are pretty high, but the quality is top notch. In Ka'anapali, we loved the fresh seafood at Leilani's On the Beach,  Hula Grill, and Duke's (all on the Ka'anapali waterfront with terrific views).  The ambiance of the beautiful Black Rock Kitchen at sunset was dreamy, though the serving sixes were tiny for such expensive prices. In Lahaina, we had a perfect lunch with a perfect view at Kimo's  and had delicious burgers at Cool Cats Cafe (home of the best burgers in Maui, ten years running).

4. Do some water activities
There are a myriad of options on the island, so every tourist should be able to find something they'll enjoy. We wanted to do stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling, and kayaking, but could not do them all. So we settled for a combo package we found with kayaking and snorkeling and loved it! Our guide was great and it was a perfect morning to be out on the water.

5. Go to a luau!
Luaus are a perfect way to dive into the Polynesian culture with fun dance shows, activities, and a delicious buffet! There are many options on all the islands, so you're sure to find one near you. We went to the luau hosted at the nearby Sheraton hotel in Ka'anapali and loved it!

6. Visit the Nakalele Blowhole and Heart-Shaped Rock Hole
A free natural attraction,  there is a moderately easy one mile downhill rugged coastline hike to the blowhole and nearby heart-shapted rock. The blowhole is similar to a geyser (a hole in the ground that periodically shoots up water into the hair), but is caused by an underground ocean cave. Turn around 180 degrees from the blowhole and you'll see the "Acid War Zone", made of boulders in various formations. Most notably, there is a rock that has a heart-shaped hole. Perfect for a pic with your loved one ♥.

7. Catch a few awesome sunsets
Wherever you are on the island, hopefully the skies are clear enough for some gorgeous sunsets to enjoy! Take a moment to stop what you're doing and soak it the beauty!

8. Drive down the road to Hana!
Check HERE for our adventures on this winding road full of lush green trees and plants, gorgeous waterfalls, and jaw-dropping coastline views.

  1. My husband & I went to Kauai on our honeymoon in October and fell in love with the island. Pictures don't do it justice, it was so beautiful. We didn't get to go to a luau but we did everything else and enjoyed every minute. A week there just wasn't enough though. We want to move!

  2. Lovely post! I have never been to Maui before, but after reading your post I definitely would love to go there one day. My hubby and I went to Mexico for our honeymoon, and I loved relaxing on the beach. It looks like the fresh fruit was amazing...yummy. It also looks like you had a lot of fun kayaking. I would love to do more kayaking the future. You also took some great pictures. Great read.

  3. We went to Oahu about two years ago and loved it--most of what we did was hiking and getting around the island via the public bus, and it was just so much fun. If we ever go back to Hawaii, I'd love the see a different island! Maui looks gorgeous, and your honeymoon photos are so cute!
